Rwanda Gorilla and Wildlife, Zanzibar in Tanzania

Uganda Gorilla Trekking

If you’re at all curious about wildlife, then gorilla trekking is a must. One of Africa’s most varied, rewarding and fascinating experiences is just a flight or two away. After the exertion and exhilaration of your trek fly down to Zanzibar, to snooze on the island’s sandy shores and explore the winding alleyways of Stone Town.

Begin your safari in Rwanda, traveling to the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes, home to the mountain gorillas and the original base of Dian Fossey during her time researching these great apes. Spend one day trekking through the dense forest, battling your way through bamboo and stinging nettles to reach your allocated gorilla family – the journey is worth every minute of exertion.

You have one precious hour to spend watching the gorillas interact with each other, watching silver backs put younger troublemakers in their place, or babies clambering up spindly branches in play. Another day is spent in the lower slopes watching a smaller primate, the golden monkey, found in troops of around 60 individuals, and highly entertaining to watch and learn about from your guide.

For your final stop you will fly onto the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. Expect turquoise waters, coral reefs and soft white sandy beaches.  You’re in charge of the pace of this part of the trip either totally disconnecting or recharging your batteries in the sunshine or fill your days with activities.

Enjoy a plethora of waters sports from snorkeling and diving trips to traditional dhow sunset cruises, and we can recommend any number of great day trips to explore this renowned spice island.  A trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town is a must, here you can explore the narrow “bazaar” streets in search of antiquities and souvenirs or marvel at the exquisitely carved ‘Zanzibar doors.

You can rest your wary legs at the lovely Serena Inn in Stone Town, as after your time in the wilds, this is the perfect place to head out and explore the maze of shops and tiny streets, go out to dinner, and watch the sun set from the sea front. Flanked by an exotic mix of sultan’s palaces, ancient dhow harbours and bright bazaars, your time at the hotel will be full of charming discoveries, ethnic elegance and Arabic opulence tied in with island sailing trips, spice tours and diving trips to some of the world’s most renowned sites.

Now it’s time for a divine, five-day escape to the beach for some serious R&R. Still staying on the island of Zanzibar, you will be taken to one of the best beachfront retreats. Spend your days here sitting back, digging your toes into the sand, and watching dhows float back and forth. You’ll also want to make time for soaking up the sun, snorkeling along the offshore marine park, swimming with dolphins at Kizimkazi and feasting on coconut, fish and local spices.
