Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Uganda really is a good destination for gorilla trekking safaris because it’s among the three gorilla hosting destinations in Africa with it hosting the most percentage of the population. Uganda has only the shy endangered Mountain Gorillas which are found both in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park therefore for all Uganda gorilla trekking safaris you should either choose Bwindi impenetrable or Mgahinga National Park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the top ten Uganda’s national parks to visit and it’s known to be hosting the most part of Uganda’s Gorilla population. It’s located in the Western part of Uganda characterized with its thick and strong impenetrable forest where these Mountain Gorillas live.

It’s usually 8-9 hours’ drive from Kampala to reach Bwindi impenetrable National Park on Masaka – Mbarara high way with a stopover at the equator for some brief explanations by the officials, Photographs and Snacks, Lunch is also provided en-route.

Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park are grouped in four sectors named Nkuringo, Buhoma, Ruhija and Rushaga sector, Rushaga sector has the more Gorilla families for trekking and Nkuringo has the least with only one gorilla family. If you opt for Gorilla Habituation in Uganda its only done in Bwindi impenetrable National Park which almost goes for a full day while in the Jungle.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the second the Gorilla hosting destination in Uganda, it’s also located in the western part of Uganda inclusive of the Virunga Massif, it’s characterized with montane and bamboo forest. It has only one gorilla family for trekking named as the Nyakagezi Gorilla family, a maximum of eight people are allowed to go for the trekking.

The permit for Gorilla trekking both in Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga National park costs $700 USD paid per person per day, Gorilla Habituation permit costs $1500 USD per person per day and all these permits are legal to be used by only one person on specified dates.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Rwanda is also among the three Gorilla hosting destinations found in Africa and it’s commonly known for the shy endangered Mountain gorillas which are found in Volcanoes National park. Volcanoes National park is one of the top Rwanda’s destinations to visit located in Ruhengeri province. Driving from Kigali it takes 2-3 hours to reach volcanoes National park.

Volcanoes National Park also has over ten habituated Gorilla families for trekking plus two gorilla families for research, some of the Gorilla families are Susa Gorilla family, Umubano gorilla family, Amahoro gorilla family, Kwitonda gorilla family, Sabyinyo Gorilla family, Agasha Gorilla family and more.

Similarly, in Rwanda maximum of eight people are allowed to go for the trekking per Gorilla family and after discovering these apes in the Jungle you are allowed to stay around with them for one hour while sharing with them, taking photos and more. The permit for Gorilla trekking in Rwanda now costs $1500 USD per person per day it was recently increased from $750 USD.

Gorilla Trekking in Democratic Republic of Congo

DR Congo is a big country located in the central part of the African continent, it’s also among the three gorilla hosting destinations in Africa, it’s also commonly known for the Mountain Nyiragongo hiking. DR Congo has both Mountain and low land Gorillas which are found in two top destinations to visit in DR Congo named as the Virunga National Park and Kahuzi Biega National Park.

Virunga National Park in DR Congo is the most popular National park in DR Congo to visit commonly known for the shy endangered Mountain Gorillas. Also, in DR Congo most times a group of eight people is allowed to go for the trekking per Gorilla family and you are allowed to stay around them for one hour after head back to the park offices for the certificate awarding.

If you wish to go for Low land Gorillas in DR Congo are found only in Kahuzi Biega National Park, in Uganda and Rwanda there is no Low land Gorillas.

The permit for gorilla trekking in DR Congo cost $ 400 USD per person per day which is cheaper as compared to the price of Uganda and Rwanda. This permit is legal to be used by only one person at the specified dates once you don’t turn up for that day it will be considered invalid next day.
