Uganda “The Pearl of Africa” is ranked to be hosting the most part of the World’s remaining gorilla population almost half of it in its major National parks which include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park with Bwindi dominating the league of hosting high numbers of mountain gorillas in its four major sectors named Ruhija sector, Buhoma sector, Rushaga sector and Nkuringo sector each sector having more than two gorilla families for gorilla trekking tours apart from Nkuringo sector which has only one gorilla family for trekking.
Over thirteen gorilla families are recorded in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for trekking and research, this is where you go with 100% assurance of seeing these apes in the jungles and that’s why it’s more liked than other gorilla hosting destinations.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in the South western part of Uganda characterized with thick impenetrable tropical rain forest, Savannah grasslands and Swampy areas where these apes reside. The best way of reaching this Park is by use of a stable 4×4 wheel drive Safari jeep via Kampala – Masaka- Mbarara highway with en-route stops over at the equator and for lunch when you land in Uganda at Entebbe airport, another option is when you land in Rwanda at Kigali airport and cross borders via Cyanika or Katuna up to Bwindi.
Trekking Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park requires you to be all set, the trekking is usually started in morning after your breakfast, a short briefing is conducted at the park offices by the park officials highlighting about dos and don’ts while in the presence of these apes.
After that session next step is starting a journey heading to the Jungle following the permanently established routes in a group of eight people with a park ranger guide to lead you through the Journey and while in the Jungle, to put it clearly always a maximum number of eight people are allowed for each Gorilla family per day.
Always gorilla trackers are the first to enter the Jungle early in the morning such that they can locate presence of these apes, after that they will be communicating with the park ranger guide via radio calls who is coming with the group of trekkers informing them about the location of these apes.
After locating these apes in the jungle, you are allowed to stay in their presence for only one hour while seeing them playing with their young ones, feeding, laughing plus taking photos and videos of them for memories, immediately after that one-hour session you are required to vacate the place such that room is created for these apes to continue with their day-to-day activities and reaching the park activities you will be awarded with a gorilla trekking certificate for recognition.
When going for the gorilla trekking activity it’s advised that you go with your packed food since most of the times lunch time reaches when you are still in the jungle, to add on that this activity requires you to be physically fit since it involves long distance movements in the jungle, when you fail on the way porters are available to carry you at a cost of $300 USD per person.
What to ensure for successful trekking?
Listed below are some of the don’ts you should ensure while in the presence of these apes: –
- Firstly, if you are suspected to be with any signs of infectious diseases you are not allowed to go for the trekking because you may spread your diseases to these apes and if this is discovered after you have gone for the trekking be ready for the fine posed to you.
- Move slowly while in the Jungle.
- Keep your voice at a low tone while in the Jungle.
- Keep a distance of about seven meters from these apes.
- Do not run after these apes.
- Do not touch on these apes without permission.
- When easing yourself in the jungle please dig a hole of about one foot and dump your wastes there.
- Do not eat in the presence of these apes.
- And lastly do not use flush cameras when taking photos and videos of these apes.
What to Pack for any Gorilla Safari?
Gorilla trekking is an exciting activity you should never miss but in order to enjoy it to your fullest do not forget to bring yourself strong impenetrable hiking shoes, Insect repellents, Sunglasses and Capes, long sleeved shirts and trouser, Water roof jackets and bags to protect yourself from mud, hooks and thorns, biting insects like tsetse flies, mosquitoes and more, sunshine, skin scratches, and rainfall water respectively plus a good camera without flush for taking some photos and videos of these apes.
